The Misfits

Growing up, Pierce Brosnan was for sure a household name, but Tim Roth held a special place in my heart, enthralled in his unforgettable performances in "Pulp Fiction" and the cult classic "Four Rooms." was life shaping for me in some ways.  Joining the team behind "The Misfits," a high-octane heist film starring the both of them, was an exhilarating opportunity.

Taking the reins as second unit director, I was tasked with orchestrating the heart-pounding action sequences that would punctuate this adrenaline-fueled adventure, filmed across the sun-drenched landscapes of Abu Dhabi and the urban sprawl of Los Angeles. This was no small feat, as the film demanded not only intense fight scenes but also elaborate car chases, all while walking the tightrope between capturing thrilling, high-stakes action and ensuring the $1.5 million Porsche 918 Spyder hero car, emerged unscathed.

Navigating the complexities of these scenes, with multiple high-performance vehicles, camera cars, and pedestrians, required meticulous planning, and unwavering precision. Every decision was made with a deep respect for the raw power and potential danger inherent in each shot. This challenge was a defining experience for me, pushing boundaries in capturing the raw, visceral energy that defines action cinema. I learned so much on this one, it was a true masterclass in the art of high-stakes filmmaking and a testament to the delicate balance between calculated mayhem and creative ambition.

2 Hours
to Vegas

date

October 2023

Location

Los Angeles // Las Vegas

In the heart of the neon-soaked city of sin, dreams collide with desperation, and the open road becomes a canvas for redemption. "Two Hours to Vegas," a branded trailer born from a collaboration with GT Radial and Sparco, is a visceral journey into the depths of the human spirit, where adrenaline-fueled action and raw emotion intertwine.

Starring Wentworth Miller and Amaury Nolasco, this white-knuckle chase from Los Angeles to Las Vegas is more than just a display of high-octane stunts & cinematic spectacle. It's a glimpse into the lives of characters haunted by their past, driven by a hunger for a second chance.

"Two Hours to Vegas" isn't just about fast cars and daring stunts; it's about the fragility of hope, the weight of regret, and the enduring power of the human spirit to seek redemption. It's a testament to the resilience of the broken, the beauty of second chances, and the transformative power of the open road.

This project, which I both directed and lensed, is a testament to the power of cinematic storytelling, and my attempt at capturing the raw essence of the human experience. It's a love letter to the dreamers, the risk-takers, & those who dare to chase their destiny, even when the odds are stacked against them. And like a phoenix rising from the ashes, "Two Hours to Vegas" ignited a creative fire that would lead to its currently optioned feature film deal with Warner Brothers, proving that sometimes, the greatest stories are born from the darkest of places.

Growing up, Top Gear wasn't just a show; it was a portal into a world of automotive passion and artistry that fueled a fire within me long before filmmaking was even a distant dream. Yet, destiny had a way of weaving unexpected paths, leading me to the director's chair for a season and ultimately this very episode here before you. To helm this show was a surreal honor, a full-circle moment that transported me back to those childhood days in Kansas, proving that even the wildest dreams can become reality.

For this episode, aptly titled "Movie Magic," I wanted to shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes of automotive filmmaking and the Instruments that have for decades been behind the scenes at Top Gear itself – the “camera car” and the iconic Ultimate Arm, a tool chest that has played an integral part of film history. My intent with this one was to unveil the secrets behind some of the most iconic chase scenes in history that have thrilled audiences for decades. My vision was to orchestrate a cinematic symphony of motion and machinery, set against the dramatic backdrop of California's Jawbone Canyon.

With the  visceral Death Valley as our canvas and four picture cars in play, we orchestrated a symphony of horsepower and precision. Breaking from the traditional "cross-coverage, anything goes" style often seen in  scripted reality television formatting, I embraced the traditional 180-degree rule coverage of the cinema business, crafting a continuous immersive experience that unfolded like a scene ripped straight from a Hollywood blockbuster. Each shot was meticulously planned and executed, a testament to the technical mastery and artistic vision that elevates car chases into breathtaking works of art.

"Movie Magic" is more than just an episode of Top Gear; it's an homage to the passion, creativity, and relentless pursuit of excellence that defines the world of automotive filmmaking. I felt like there was no better stage to unfurrow the art of car shooting then on the most iconic car show in history. This episode is currently, at least to my knowledge the most comprehensive inside look at the technical mastery behind the camera car and the ingenuity of the filmmakers who consistently push boundaries in attempts to redefine the very language of action cinema.

This project was particularly close to my heart. It was a chance to unveil the Top Crane Ghost One – a new and revolutionary take on a classic filmmaking tool that has been a trusted companion for me, for over a decade.

This video transcends mere technical demonstration; it's a window into my directorial style, my love for high-octane action, and my relentless pursuit of breathtaking visuals. It for me was a testament to the synergy between a filmmaker and a tool that has shaped my career.

Four days of heart-pounding action across the diverse landscapes of Los Angeles – from urban streets to the desolate high desert, theiconic Griffith Park helipad, and a green screen stage with motion control robot work, prepping the canvas for the would-be 258 vfx shots to come – this video embodies my signature blend of thrilling action and powerful visuals.

I hope it translates the thrill of the chase, the symphony of precision choreography, and the artistry of composition captured at breakneck speed. This for me wasn't just a product showcase; it's a love letter to my kind of filmmaking, penned in smoke from burning rubber, a testament to the transformative power of collaboration and the boundless possibilities that emerge when passion and technology collide.

ESPN - Depth Chart

date

October 2011

Location

ABurn Alabama

Documentary filmmaking has always held a special place in my heart. It's a medium that transcends entertainment, allowing us to connect with real people, real stories, and the raw emotions that drive us. "Depth Chart: Auburn" was a unique opportunity for me to immerse myself in a world I knew little about – college football.

Spending 38 days in the blistering heat of Auburn, Alabama, I followed the journeys of four quarterbacks vying for the starting position. Despite my initial unfamiliarity with the sport, I soon found myself captivated by the passion, dedication, and sheer determination displayed by these young athletes. It was a testament to the power of storytelling, revealing the human drama beneath the helmets and pads.

"Depth Chart: Auburn" is more than just a sports documentary; it's a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, the pursuit of dreams, and the unwavering camaraderie that forms in the crucible of competition. It's a story of sweat, tears, and the unbreakable bonds forged on the gridiron. It's a testament to the power of documentary filmmaking and its ability to capture the essence of the human experience and hopefully, a story that will help inspire us all to reach for greatness.

Dior Homme

December 2018

Location

Bukhara, Uzbekistan

In the world of luxury brands, visual storytelling is paramount. When Dior Home sought to capture its essence on film, they entrusted me with a challenge: to translate the allure of their creations into a cinematic experience that would transcend the ordinary.

For me, this wasn't just a commercial project; it was a personal quest to find the extraordinary within the everyday, to capture the delicate balance between beauty and grit, elegance and raw emotion. The ancient city of Bukhara, Uzbekistan, with its timeless architecture and vibrant culture, provided the perfect backdrop for this visual symphony.

I envisioned a film that would not merely showcase the product but would evoke the same sense of wonder and aspiration that Dior Home inspires. With Daniel Ilabaca, the virtuoso of parkour, as our guide, we transformed the city's iconic landmarks into a playground of movement and expression.

The Kalyan Minaret and the Ark Citadel, steeped in history, became a canvas for Daniel's breathtaking athleticism. Every leap, every vault, every precise movement was a testament to the human spirit's boundless potential, a reflection of the artistry and dedication that define Dior Home.

This project wasn't without its challenges. The scorching heat, and the complexities of capturing Daniel's dynamic performance pushed us to our limits. But it was in those moments of challenge that the true magic emerged.

"Dior Home in Bukhara" is more than just a branded film; it's a testament to the power of collaboration, the unwavering pursuit of excellence, and the ability to find beauty in the most unexpected places. It's a testament to my commitment as a filmmaker to go beyond the surface, to capture the essence of a brand, and to create an emotional connection that resonates with audiences long after the final frame fades to black.

ESPN - Death By Wingsuit

date

March 2018

Location

California

"Death by Wingsuit" is a story that emerged not from some writer’s room session or noisy pitch meeting, but from the depths of my heart. Daniel Rodriguez, a brilliant mind, a skilled athlete, & a dear friend, faced a devastating and potentially terminal cancer diagnosis. His response was not despair, but defiance. He chose to live what he believed could be his final days on his own terms, embracing the exhilarating, high-stakes world of base jumping & wingsuit proximity flying.

I had always admired Daniel's adventurous spirit, but witnessing his courageous defiance in the face of mortality deeply resonated with me. As someone perpetually caught in the undertow of past regrets and future anxieties, his unwavering embrace of the present moment was a revelation, a powerful reminder to break free from the ceaseless churn of my neurosis and simply be. When ESPN Films offered me the chance to pitch a series of documentaries, I knew without a doubt that his story was the one that needed to be told. It was a testament to the indomitable resilience of the human spirit, a celebration of life lived on the edge, a poignant exploration of what it means to stare death in the face and choose to truly live.

Seeking out and partnering with renowned aerial cinematographer Joe Jennings, we embarked on an odyssey, capturing Daniel's world in all its complexity and beauty. from the quiet moments of introspection, the internal battles waged in solitude, the subtle triumphs and the heart-stopping exhilaration of his wingsuit flights, we invited the audience to bear witness to the essence of a man grappling with his mortality.

"Death by Wingsuit" isn't just a documentary; it's a testament to the enduring power of friendship, the transformative nature of adversity, and the indomitable spirit that resides within us all. It's a celebration of life lived on the edge, a reminder that even in the darkest of times, the human spirit can find a way to soar. As the outpouring of support from viewers around the world has shown, Daniel's story is a beacon of hope, an inspiration to those battling their own demons, and a powerful reminder that within each of us lies the strength to overcome any challenge. It is a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit to find solace, purpose, and even joy in the face of our inevitable mortality.
